Did you know you can make applesauce in less than an hour? It's delicious, with no added sugar (well, it's optional), and can be a fun way to get your kids involved in a farm-to-table recipe. Let's get saucy!
I've put an * by the items I can purchase at my Illinois farmers market. INGREDIENTS
6 medium-to-large apples
2/3 cup water
1 pinch salt
1/2 cup sugar (if you want...otherwise omit to ensure this is a natural applesauce)
DIRECTIONS
Peel and core the apples. Then cut each apple into quarters.
Put the slices in a pot of cold water with a pinch of salt.
Cover and bring the water to a simmer.
You'll know the apples are done when they are fork tender.
If you want to add sugar, pour it in the mixture now. Simmer well to melt the sugar.
Take the apples off the heat and mash with a potato masher for a thick applesauce or place the apples in a food processor for a more smooth applesauce.
Place sauce into clean jars or containers and refrigerate.
Serving size: Makes about 1 pound of applesauce.
